"Tennessee Titans running back Javon Ringer will get more carries in the coming weeks, but not because Coach Mike Munchak is down on Chris Johnson.
Munchak doesn't want to overwork Johnson, who led the NFL in attempts in 2009 and was sixth last season. But the coach also likes Ringer, who had 21 yards on five carries against the Ravens and scored the go-ahead touchdown.
"We all have confidence that when he is in there, something good can still happen. It is not, 'C.J. is not in the game, we can't run the ball,' " Munchak said Monday. "I have always been a big Javon Ringer fan. I think he runs hard, he is smart, he can play third down for us and is a good blocker."
Through two games, Johnson is averaging 2.3 yards per carry. Against the Ravens, he rushed for 53 yards on 24 attempts.
"The good thing is at the end of the game we didn't get frustrated, he didn't get frustrated, and he had some nice 5- and 6-yard runs," Munchak said. "… But there's a combination of a lot of things right now where it's not quite where we want it to be."
Johnson was booed at LP Field for the first time.
"You don't want that from anybody, but to me it's part of the game," Munchak said. "People pay a lot of money to be in those seats. Fans are entitled to be frustrated, but the good thing is he's not frustrated.""
