During an afternoon press conference today, St. Louis Cardinals Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Bill DeWitt, Jr. announced that manager Mike Matheny was given a three year contract extension.

General manager John Mozeliak was also on hand for the announcement. Mo really believes Matheny loves what he’s doing. Mo wanted to “resolve it quicky feeling he was deserving of this” rather than do something in late spring training.

“I do love what I do, but to do it here in a place I call home is extremely special… I’m very grateful,” said Matheny.
Mozeliak also touched on a few other things.

He spoke to Chris Carpenter over the weekend. Carpenter “has concluded that it’s time to retire.” Mo is hopeful that Carp will join the organization to contribute in time in some way. Mo said that Carp will address the media at some point after the holidays.

“He’ll go down as one of the greatest we’ve ever had,” said Mo on Carpenter.
