"Players very rarely interrupt the media session Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland holds three hours or so before each game.
But there was first baseman Miguel Cabrera, wearing a huge smile Tuesday afternoon while poking his head into the visiting manager's office at Progressive Field.
"Congratulations," Cabrera said, before playfully flipping the light on and off while saying, "Contract, no contract. Contract, no contract. Contract, no contract."
Then Cabrera left.
"Well," Leyland joked. "At least one of them's happy."
Cabrera was not the only Tigers player who was happy when the team announced Monday that Leyland had earned a one-year extension to his contract that will keep him with the team through next season. Count pitcher Justin Verlander among the fans of the move."
