Michigan left tackle Grant Newsome still holds the goal of being medically cleared to return to football by the start of the 2018 season.

"Before then hopefully," Newsome said Sunday night. "As soon as possible."

Newsome, a 6-foot-7, 315-pounder from New Jersey, sat out the 2017 season to continue rehabbing a serious injury that nearly cost him his right leg midway through the program's 2016 campaign.

During a win over Wisconsin in October of 2016, Newsome suffered a dislocated knee after an on-field collision. The injury was severe enough that doctors feared they wouldn't be able to save Newsome's leg during an initial emergency surgery.

From there, and after 10 days in the intensive care unit, Newsome had six surgical procedures performed over the next 40 days and went through intense rehab sessions to regain strength in his right leg.
