Michael Young nearing another Rangers record

"The Texas Rangers' all-time games-played record will have to wait to be broken by Michael Young until Tuesday.

The six-time All-Star moved within one of the club mark for games and was in position to break Rafael Palmeiro's record of 1,573 Sunday at Target Field.

But manager Ron Washington will give Young a day to rest today, so the soonest that Young can play game No. 1,574 will likely be next week at Yankee Stadium.

Washington discussed his plan with Young before the Rangers' 9-3 victory over Minnesota. Young entered the game in a 4-for-39 funk, and Washington thought he detected some fatigue.

Young disagreed, but will take the day and is appreciative that his manager is looking out for him.

"I want to play every day, but at the same time Wash was great," Young said. "He told me he wants to take care of me. I told him I'm fine, but he wanted to give me a blow."

Washington could have given Young a day Sunday and used the off day Monday to give Young two days while missing only one game. But the Twins are scheduled to start Francisco Liriano, and Washington wants his best right-handed bats in there against the lefty."
