Michael Young and Vlad Guerrero's defense lets down Rangers in loss

"Rangers manager Ron Washington likes to live dangerously. He intends to use Vlad Guerrero in right field again tonight in Game 2 of the World Series.

Guerrero had a game full of defensive misadventures in the World Series opener on Wednesday night. His plus-minus rating was minus-1.

Guerrero drove in two runs during the 11-7 loss to San Francisco. He set up three runs with a pair of errors. The Rangers overall had four errors.

"Jitters didn't have anything to do with it," Washington said when offered a potential excuse for the defensive showing.

The loss underscored two potential defensive pitfalls for the Rangers: Guerrero in right field and Michael Young at third base.

Guerrero was once a good right fielder, but he is a bad-kneed designated hitter at this stage of his career. Because National League rules are in effect for games at AT&T Park, Washington's choices are to get one at-bat from Guerrero as a pinch-hitter or multiple at-bats as the right fielder.

The wild card is this park features the most treacherous right field in the game. It is vast, with twists, turns and tricky bounces. Even the bullpen mounds are in play, as Guerrero discovered when he mishandled Freddy Sanchez's single during the three-run eighth inning. Guerrero opened that inning by kicking Edgar Renteria's single.

Guerrero, through an interpreter, said this is not a difficult right field and showed no interest in the further discussion of the subject. Guerrero could take comfort in knowing the left side of the infield had as many errors as he did.

Shortstop Elvis Andrus and Young each had an error. Andrus' error came on a careless attempt to field a grounder during the Giants' six-run fifth inning. The error did not contribute to the scoring, but it added to the embarrassment of the inning.

Young's error helped change the course of the game.

Renteria, the No. 8 hitter, led off the third with a hard grounder to Young's left side. As he often does in these situations, Young tried for the sweep stop rather than moving sideways to get in better position. Graig Nettles made a career out of playing third base that way. Young won a Gold Glove as a shortstop, but as a third baseman he is not Graig Nettles. "
