Jose Mourinho has revealed he dropped Wayne Rooney against Arsenal because he wanted to play attackers who were “faster” and more effective “one to one” and not as a consequence of the Manchester United and England captain’s indiscretions on international duty.

Rooney started in the 3-1 win at Swansea City in United’s previous Premier League outing but Mourinho felt his team’s interests would be better served on Saturday by playing Juan Mata and Anthony Martial either side of central striker Marcus Rashford.

Rooney had issued a public apology on Wednesday after apparently getting drunk in the England team hotel 24 hours after his country’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland at Wembley 10 days ago.
