Miami Dolphins pass rush faltering in the early season

"Cam Wake wasn't satisfied when he finished the 2010 season with 14 sacks for the Miami Dolphins. He said he wouldn't have been satisfied if he'd finished with more than that. And he's certainly not satisfied now, with two sacks in the Dolphins' first three games.

"I'm always a guy who needs more," Wake said Friday, after the Dolphins practiced for the final time before their game Sunday at the San Diego Chargers. "Hit the quarterback more often than we are. More sacks … there's never enough. So I'm not as easy a guy to please when it comes to that."

One of the primary reasons for the Dolphins' defensive success a season ago was the frequency with which Wake and other members of the defense pressured opposing quarterbacks. Wake had 14 of those sacks, but he also had 28 quarterback hits — by far the most on the team.

As much as their fierce pass rush helped the Dolphins a season ago, the lack of one has hurt them early this season. Through three games, the Dolphins have registered just four sacks. Only three teams have fewer. The Dolphins have also recorded just nine quarterback hits, well off the pace that allowed the Dolphins to finish the 2010 season with 66 quarterback hits.

Wake again leads the team in sacks, with two, but his success has been limited in the early season. And outside of Wake, the team's pass rush has been virtually nonexistent.

Tom Brady, the New England Patriots' quarterback, had ample time to pick apart the Dolphins during the Patriots' 38-24 victory in Week 1. The Texans' Matt Schaub had plenty of time to throw in Week 2."
