"Two weeks after being touched by enormous personal tragedy, Joe Philbin learned Friday that he will become the 10th head coach in Miami Dolphins history, bringing with him nearly three decades of experience, including five years overseeing one of the NFL's most prolific offenses.
Philbin, the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator since 2007, was chosen over the two other finalists — Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles. He is expected to receive a four-year contract and will be introduced at a news conference Saturday.
In a statement released by the Dolphins on Friday night, Philbin said he appreciates the chance to coach "one of the premier franchises in professional sports. The Dolphins have a strong nucleus to build around, and working with everyone in the organization, I know that together we will return the team to its winning tradition."
Owner Stephen Ross was highly impressed by Philbin during two presentations (Jan.?7 and this past Wednesday) and hopes Philbin's sharp offensive mind can invigorate a Dolphins offense that finished 30th and 20th in points scored during the past two seasons."
