At a press conference at Citi Field just a few minutes ago, Mets GM Sandy Alderson announced that Johan Santana would likely be shut down for the balance of the 2012 season. Santana underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on Tuesday, the results of which revealed inflammation in his lower back. The early prognosis is rest and medication, as doctors have not yet indicated that surgery will be a necessary course of treatment for Santana.

Roster-wise, Santana has been placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 18, and while no corresponding move has been announced officially, it's probably safe to assume that Collin McHugh, who was added to the taxi squad on Tuesday, will be promoted to take the start on Thursday against the Rockies. If you're not already familiar with McHugh, check out our scouting report from earlier today.
