Zack Wheeler, scratched from his last start with a mild right oblique strain, is expected to throw a bullpen Tuesday or Wednesday, pitching coach Dan Warthen said.

Warthen said Wheeler may throw two bullpens before his next start, which could be right around the corner.

"If everything goes well," Warthen said Sunday afternoon, "I would hope to see him in a game by this time next week."

Nieuwenhuis hurt

An already thin outfield lost one of its cogs when Kirk Nieuwenhuis hurt his knee during Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium.

Nieuwenhuis suffered what the team is calling a "bruised right knee" while sliding into second base.

He was scheduled to see a doctor after the game.

"I don’t think it’s that bad," Nieuwenhuis said at his locker stall in the visiting clubhouse. "I just think it’s a bad bruise or something like that."

Nieuwenhuis joins an injury list that includes Wheeler (oblique), second baseman Daniel Murphy (ribs) and closer Frank Francisco (elbow).
