"The voice of Mets manager Terry Collins contained a mixture of caution and hope. This afternoon, he wrote out a lineup to face the Giants without his starting first baseman, his starting third baseman and his starting shortstop. But he could envision a future with all three, all of whom are apparently progressing in their separate rehabilitations.
"Those are all bright spots as we head into the break," Collins said. "Coming out of the break knowing that those guys are going to start getting ready to come back, that's great news for us."
By the time the Mets begin a 10-game road trip July 22, perhaps all three could be back. Collins cannot guarantee that. He can only report the progress he hears each day. Today provided plenty of that, from across the country.
In Arizona, first baseman Ike Davis ran on a treadmill without any weight assistance, completing the program without any discomfort. On the disabled list since May 11 with a bone bruise in his ankle, Davis may begin the major test of running on flat ground as soon as Sunday, Collins said. If he can progress, he might avoid season-ending microfracture surgery.
In Port St. Lucie, third baseman David Wright relayed his progress to Collins. On the disabled list since May 16 with a stress fracture in his lower back, he is "almost at full speed running," Collins said. Wright is taking batting practice and fielding practice with the Class-A St. Lucie Mets, preparing to run the bases Monday and could begin rehab games on Wednesday.
Collins wants Wright to receive 30 to 40 minor-league at-bats before he rejoins the big-league club.
And at AT&T Park, where the team hoped to build off the previous night's emotional victory, shortstop Jose Reyes took part in some fielding drills. "
