Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo were owed a combined $18 million for 2011, but that didn't stop general manager Sandy Alderson from dumping both in spring training, if for no other reason than attempting to placate an irate fan base. Perez and Castillo were glaring examples of money misspent during the Omar Minaya regime, with Jason Bay still on the books.

The most optimistic forecasts had Johan Santana arriving in June to bolster the Mets' rotation. Then it became the All-Star break, August, September and never. Santana was limited to one minor-league rehab start in his comeback from surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder. The Mets already have begun dropping hints he may not be ready to start the 2012 season, either."
