"Shawne Merriman's change of agents has at least brought about dialogue.
Whether this openness ultimately has any effect on the linebacker's future with the Chargers remains to be seen. But there is at least conversation, and who is involved makes it noteworthy.
Sources said that Merriman's new agent, David Dunn, met for two hours Thursday afternoon with Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith and Vice President Ed McGuire.
While it was characterized as the type of "introductory" meeting that commonly takes place when a player changes representatives, that it was in person and for that length of time might be considered remarkable. Often, these meetings will take place over the phone.
Most notable was Smith's involvement.
McGuire, the team's chief negotiator, is in regular contact with agents. But a man missing a thumb on both hands and one pinkie could probably count on his fingers the number of agents with whom Smith personally interacts. Tom Condon, Merriman's former agent, was practically a nemesis of Smith's.
Contacted Thursday, Smith confirmed the powwow but would not give details."
