Ryan Cook threw off the mound Tuesday for the first time since straining his right forearm, and the A’s reliever was pleasantly surprised at how sharp he was with all of his pitches.

A’s manager Bob Melvin was equally pleased after watching Cook throw 22 pitches.

“He looked like he’d never missed a beat,” Melvin said. “He hasn’t been out that long. I feel like we dodged a bullet as far as what the injury looked like originally. He was throwing his slider as hard as he could throw it.”

The current plan is for Cook to throw another bullpen session Thursday. Though the A’s don’t have a set plan beyond that, Melvin added that he thinks Cook could require as little as one minor league rehab appearance before eventually rejoining the 25-man roster.
