Mayo says banned substance was in 'energy drink or something similar'

"Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo said the product that included a banned substance and led to his 10-game suspension without pay by the NBA was purchased over the counter at a local gas station.

When asked to name the product or why he used it, Mayo declined to give specifics.

"It was an energy drink or something similar," Mayo said Saturday several hours before the Griz hosted the Washington Wizards. "It was bad judgment on my behalf because I maybe should have gotten it checked out by Drew (Graham, the team's athletic trainer). I can't go too much into it because of the NBA."

Mayo tested positive for the steroid precursor dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a substance prohibited under the NBA's anti-drug policy. The 6-4 reserve guard maintained that he never intentionally did anything wrong.

"It's not like I went to a GNC and got some kind of Muscle Armor or something. Or ordered some supplement off the Internet or anything," Mayo said. "A local gas station got me hemmed up. I've definitely got to make better decisions. I admit to my mistake, and it's something I've got to deal with."

Mayo isn't eligible to play again until Feb. 15, when the Griz play the Philadelphia 76ers. He'll also be docked about $405,000.

Mayo said he learned of the positive test in December. The league informed Mayo of its intent to test a second urine sample because his first, which was taken in November, showed DHEA.

Mayo received the suspension when the second sample didn't pass. Mayo said he used the product in question near the start of the regular season when he submitted his first urine test.

Players are randomly tested four times each season."
