Mayo, Randolph sit for tardiness

"O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph did not start Saturday against the Miami Heat because they arrived late for the Grizzlies' shootaround.

Griz coach Lionel Hollins announced the discipline about 90 minutes before tip-off. Rookie guard Xavier Henry and third-year forward Darrell Arthur started instead.

"I'm just trying to let everybody know, it's about the team," Hollins said. "Guys have to represent, follow the rules, and respect your teammates."

Hollins said both players were more than a few minutes late. Randolph said he thought the practice was scheduled for 4:45 p.m. The Griz met at 4:30.

"It's a one-time thing," Hollins said. "If they had been this way before, they wouldn't have started before. I could live with coming in a minute or two (late) and we really haven't started. But we'd already gotten into running the other team's plays. So it was a little bit more serious."

Mayo and Randolph sat out the entire first quarter. Randolph started the second quarter and Mayo finally checked in with 10:13 left before halftime. Both players were also held out of the lineup when the second half began.

Mayo's consecutive starts streak ended at 177 games. He owned the NBA's third-longest streak behind Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher (304) and Houston forward Luis Scola (215).

"It was different," Mayo said. "I've never come off the bench before. But I kind of let my team down by showing up late. Coach did the right thing."

Odds and ends

Mayo is going through the worst offensive struggles of his career. He made just 1 of 7 shots against the Heat one night after misfiring on 10 of 11 attempts during a loss at Washington.

Mayo's first basket Saturday night was a big one. He made a five-foot floater in the lane, and put the Griz ahead 91-90 with 2:15 left in the fourth period. Memphis never trailed after that."
