Cameron Maybin is doubtful for the Padres' season opener on March 30, manager Bud Black said Monday morning.

While Black met with the media, Maybin was undergoing an MRI a day after injuring his left shoulder and bicep on a diving catch.

"More than likely, it looks as though he won't be ready Opening Day," Black said. "There's bicep involvement. We're going to continue to monitor the shoulder involvement. When he landed he jarred the shoulder and did some damage to the bicep tendon.

"We'll know more in a couple days. There will be a better diagnosis and prognosis."

After undergoing today's MRI, Maybin will fly home to North Carolina to attend a family member's funeral service. He is expected to return to camp Wednesday.

Maybin was limited to just 14 games last season with wrist and knee injuries. He had very recently shown signs of returning to health. Saturday, a day before his latest injury, he hit his first home run since June 9.
