"It had been awhile since the Lions imploded, so you might have forgotten how ugly it can look. This was an awful response to a big game, starting with the quarterback and splintering from there.
Matthew Stafford was brutal and baffling, which put him in a category with a lot of Lions. If this was the launching of a second-half playoff drive, it couldn't have started worse.
The Lions weren't ready for this, weren't ready for the wind, weren't ready for the animosity. Stafford threw four interceptions, two returned for touchdowns in the third quarter, but the game was lost even before then. That's just where it completely unraveled, as the Bears rolled to a 37-13 victory Sunday.
For the first time all season, the Lions regressed and retreated, not only shaken badly by the Bears, but shaken badly by the moment. Stafford threw wildly — 33 for 63 — and you know something is amiss when the Lions' postgame quarterback analysis focused on two things.
The wind. The finger.
Stafford confirmed his right index finger is fractured, and it was the reason he wore gloves for the first time in a game. He hurt it against Denver before the bye. It made it harder to grip the ball, and perhaps made it easier to throw it to the guys wearing orange jerseys.
There are no excuses, but there has to be some concern. The wind was bad, reportedly a steady 22 mph. But I'm guessing it wasn't great for Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, either. Granted, he had the luxury of a more-consistent running game with Matt Forte and threw only 19 passes."
