"If you're looking for a backup QB who's off the radar and could produce like a QB1, look no further than Chiefs signal caller Matt Cassel. The former Patriot threw 27 passing TDs last season and just seven interceptions, nearly a 4-to-1 ratio over 15 games. Those numbers represented about 90 percent of his numbers from 2008 in New England, when he was thrust into a juggernaut offense. While 2009 was a down year, the Chiefs have made enormous strides since then, and a renewed focus on the ground game won't prevent him from racking up the TDs in 2011.
Cassel is a huge wild card, largely because we still haven't seen a lot of him under center. He's had 45 starts in the last three seasons, but nary a snap in the seven previous campaigns (three seasons as an idle backup to Brady in New England and four years of clipboard carrying at USC). Cassel adjusted well to the starting role at the outset, and once the Chiefs shored up their defense and Dwayne Bowe established himself as a truly dangerous NFL receiver, Cassel came into his own. Now, Kansas City has added Cardinals castoffs Steve Breaston and Jerheme Urban, not to mention a viable Rookie of the Year candidate in Jonathan Baldwin - a Pittsburgh product who could excel as the No. 2 option in K.C.
Baldwin and Cassel have gotten off to a great start this preseason, and the rookie's skill set could mean monster numbers right off the bat. Early reports indicate Baldwin struggled with the offense in his first few practices, but I have a hunch he'll be a regular contributor by Week 4, with the versatile Breaston coming out of the slot and Urban filling in on four-receiver sets. The Chiefs also added fullback LeRon McClain, who should be a tremendous help in pass-blocking situations."
