"Matt Cain is one of the hottest pitchers in the major leagues, but the Giants also needed a few veterans to snap out of deep freezes Wednesday night to prevent getting swept by the Colorado Rockies.
Cain pitched eight more outstanding innings, Aaron Rowand hit a two-run double in the fifth, and Bengie Molina contributed an RBI single in the sixth as the Giants won 4-1 at AT&T Park — their sixth victory to finish a nine-game homestand.
It marked just the second time this season that Rowand and Molina, two of the club's core players, knocked in runs in the same game.
"We want to help the team, man," said Molina, whose hit snapped an 0-for-17 and accounted for just his second RBI since May 5. "Sometimes people don't understand. They don't know if you're banged up. But believe me, we're not trying to hurt the team in any manner."
Cain (4-4) held the Rockies to four hits, including a home run to Troy Tulowitzki in the fourth (the only earned run Cain has allowed in three starts). Cain was coming off a one-hit shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks and had a 1.81 ERA in May.
"I felt like this in spring training, and I'm getting it back," Cain said. "Bengie was calling it to both sides of the plate, and I was going with it."
Molina said: "He has such an explosive fastball. When he's locating it, he is really tough to hit. And later, when he gets tired, the ball starts to move more.""
