Cardinals manager Mike Matheny struck a new note of caution with third baseman David Freese, acknowledging Tuesday that the schedule of games in Jupiter, Fla., may not allow Freese enough time to be ready for the home opener Monday at Busch Stadium.

Freese remained back at the Cardinals’ spring training facility because of back inflammation that interrupted his March three times with pain.

Matheny and the Cardinals would like to see Freese play a complete game several times to assure the back won’t have another re-aggravation.

With only two games available, Matheny said it may not be the test the team requires to dismiss “any reservations.”

“We have to see how he bounces back,” Matheny said. “We just don’t have a lot of time to get as much information as we need. Not ruling out that he couldn’t be there on the opener, but also not ruling out that he could need a little more time.”
