Cardinals manager Mike Matheny came off the 1-day disabled list today, even though he probably was far from 100 percent.

Overnight on Thursday/Friday, Matheny said he was “locked up” with a herniated disc in his lower back which affected his right leg.

“Then when that got me to the point where I couldn’t even move, food poisoning kicked in,” said Matheny, who spent much of Friday holed up alone in his office here while his team played 125 miles away in Kissimmee, Fla.

Matheny, who will get an epidural on Monday to help relieve the discomfort, said he never had either ailment.

“Try getting food poisoning when you can’t move,” said Matheny, not needing to state the obvious.

“That hit at the worst time possible.”

Goat cheese on a salad at a local restaurant seemed to be the culprit, Matheny said.

While Matheny is available to be in the dugout for today’s exhibition game here with the Washington Nationials, right fielder Carlos Beltran, who suffered a bruised little toe on his right foot when hit by a pitch on Thursday, isn't back yet, having been scratched from the original lineup.
