"Making his weekly appearance on "The Norris & Davis Show" on 105.7 The Fan this morning, Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason called NFL commissioner Roger Goodell "a joke" for his stance on human growth hormone testing and said that Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco will get his extension eventually.
Speaking to Woodlawn High students yesterday about the dangers of using performance-enhancing drugs, Goodell said that HGH testing must be part of the new collective bargaining agreement with the players. Asked about Goodell's comments by hosts Steve Davis and Ed Norris, Mason said that now isn't the time for the commissioner to be worrying about drug testing.
"You want to do whatever you have to do to make sure there's not a competitive edge in the sport," Mason said. "Blood tests, I don't know. They've been crying about a blood test for [a long time]. I think that's too intrusive. There's other ways and other methods, I think, to go about testing for it.
"He needs to stop crying about blood tests and HGH. He needs to try to get a deal done, that's what he needs to do. He's been on this crusade about HGH, but he needs to be on a crusade about getting these owners together and trying to work out a deal. To me, he's a joke, because every time I look, he's talking about performance enhancements instead of talking about trying to figure out a way to make sure football is played in August."
Mason was asked if he would call Goodell "a joke" to his face."
