Marlins prevail in stirring pitchers' duel between Johnson, Halladay

"Roy Halladay wasn't perfect. Josh Johnson wasn't unhittable. Yet the vivacious Tuesday night Sun Life Stadium crowd did not leave disappointed.

Halladay, making his first South Florida start since last year's perfect game, and Johnson each allowed a run over seven innings. Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins' fielding error provided a narrow opening to start the eighth and the Marlins bulldozed through it.

A wild pitch put Omar Infante at second. An Ozzie Martinez groundout advanced him to third and Chris Coghlan dumped a 2-1 offering into short-center, sending the Marlins to a series-evening 2-1 victory in front of 21,955 fans, more than 6,000 of whom were walk-ups.

"When you have the two horses going at it, you know it's a battle," Coghlan said. "You have to scratch and claw for every run."

For Halladay (5-2), the loss was his first against a National League East opponent since last June 10 against the Marlins. He had won 13 consecutive games against divisional rivals with a 1.99 ERA during that span.

After Emilio Bonifacio's third-inning sacrifice fly, Halladay plowed over the Marlins' batting order. He retired 13 in a row, five via strikeout, before Rollins' error. The nine outs he registered between the fifth and seventh innings required 27 pitches.

Johnson, who gave up a solo homer to Ryan Howard in the second, wasn't as efficient. The Phillies' ace through seven innings tossed 24 fewer pitches than Johnson. He exited with 114 pitches, three fewer than the season-high 117 he reached on April 24 and April 30."
