Manchester United midfield man Shinji Kagawa could be returning to German side Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Kagawa joined United from Dortmund in 2012, but the Bundesliga side now want the Japanese international back, though they are understood to be interested in a temporary rather than permanent deal.

After arriving at Old Trafford in a £12m deal prior to the 2012-2013 season, Kagawa failed to win a regular starting spot in Sir Alex Ferguson's title winning side, and has made only sporadic appearances this term despite United's faltering form.

Kagawa at last showed Red Devils fans flashes of his best form when he starred in United's 4-1 home victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

But according to reports in The Sun, the Japanese star is wanted by his old club Dortmund on a loan basis and could be on his way out of Old Trafford.

The German giants warmed up for Wednesday's crunch Champions League quarter-final first leg at Real Madrid by storming back from two down to win 3-2 at struggling VfB Stuttgart and return to second spot in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
