Manchester United are the favourites to sign Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen this summer.

As reported by The Daily Star, the Red Devils have been backed as short as 5/2 to land the Belgian ace, with the report suggesting that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to do business with the club's direct Premier League rivals.

It appears that Wenger could be ready to cash in on the defender this summer, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker his No.1 defensive partnership. The duo played a key role in Arsenal's success last season, as they helped the club end their trophy drought.

However, if Manchester United do make a move for the Arsenal skipper in the up coming market, then they may have to battle Italian giants Juventus for the player's signature. The Serie A outfit are reportedly ready to negotiate a deal with the Gunners in order to land the club's captain.

If Louis van Gaal does bring the Gunners man to Old Trafford, then it will be the second time in a matter of years that the Red Devils have landed an Arsenal captain.

Despite the fact that Vermaelen is struggling for opportunities in north London, it's likely that a move to Manchester United won't go down well with fans of the Gunners.

But is he the man Manchester United really need? Well, he may be struggling at Arsenal, but perhaps he's in need of a new challenge. The Red Devils are certainly in need of defensive reinforcements after the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand departed the club at the end of last season.
