The veteran defender is out of contract at the end of this season and has not been offered a new deal.

United have an option to trigger an extra 12 months of his current £90,000-a-week deal but have left him in limbo.

The former England captain, 35, is expected to leave Old Trafford as part of a huge summer clear-out by boss David Moyes.

Moyes needs to make huge changes to his squad and knows Ferdinand is not part of his long-term plans.

But Ferdinand admits he wants to continue playing and insists he can still do a job at the highest level.

The centre back, who has been linked with a return to former club West Ham or a move to QPR, said: “Hopefully I’ll still be playing - I want to continue playing.

“I’m enjoying my football and my legs haven’t given way yet.

“I want to continue, whether that be at Manchester United or somewhere else, depending what the club want to do. Time will tell, we’ll have to wait until the end of the season.”
