Manager David Moyes is eager to add to his squad and has earmarked a creative midfielder to fill the void left by the retiring Paul Scholes.

According to Mundo Deportivo the United boss will attempt to sign Roberto from the Spanish giants once the transfer window reopens in the new year.

However Moyes will face an uphill task of convincing Roberto to leave the Camp Nou with the 21-year-old desperate to command a regular place in Gerardo Martino's first-team.

Roberto has made three appearances so far this season but his collective game time has amounted to less than 15 minutes.

Tottenham were also interested in signing the Spanish under-21 international on-loan in the summer but were rebuffed in their attempts.

Moyes saw moves to sign Cesc Fabregas Ander Herrera and Thiago Alcantara fail to materialise and had to wait until the final day of the summer transfer window to add significantly to his squad with the £27.5m arrival of Marouane Fellaini from Everton.
