Magic hope sick players recover for tonight's game against the Hawks

"Stan Van Gundy left Wisconsin hoping that Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Mickael Pietrus and J.J. Redick will recover from their stomach virus in time to play Monday against the Atlanta Hawks.

But Van Gundy also emphasized that he had no idea whether the foursome would be healthy enough.

"Monday night, I think, is still pretty iffy for a lot of guys," he said.

Redick came down with the illness first, beginning to experience symptoms early last Wednesday morning. Four days later, he still wasn't ready to play in Milwaukee.

Howard and Nelson became ill on Friday. So, if their illnesses last four full days, they wouldn't be able to play against the Hawks.

Bright spot

Nelson's absence gave 35-year-old PG Jason Williams some rare playing time and showed that Williams still has something left in the tank.

Williams played a total of 34 minutes and 30 seconds against Detroit and Milwaukee. He scored nine points, contributed six assists and committed just two turnovers.

Williams' arthroscopic knee surgery in late September denied him a chance to compete with Chris Duhon for the job as Nelson's primary backup.

He has been frustrated by his lack of playing time. Still, he has been one of the team's most engaged players on the bench during games, and Van Gundy and Magic players say he's been energetic in practice."
