Madison Bumgarner joins SF Giants' Cain fraternity

"There is an unhappy rite of passage for Giants starters. At some point, they all pitch Cy Young-caliber baseball yet rack up losses for lack of support. A verb was created to describe the phenomenon. It's called "getting Cained."

The Giants occasionally score for Matt Cain now, but Bumgarner has been Cained so often his back must look like the canals of Mars. It happened again Thursday night, when Bumgarner was at his stingiest, yet found himself on the blunt end of a 3-0 loss.

Bumgarner allowed one run in seven innings, walked none and struck out seven - and fell to 2-8.

Here is Bumgarner's Caining almanac:

Five of his eight losses have come by scores of 3-1, 2-0, 2-0, 2-1 and now 3-0. In seven of his eight losses, the Giants have scored once or been shut out. Over his past nine starts, Bumgarner has a 1.93 ERA, yet is 2-5.

A lesser man would chew through his glove. But Bumgarner calmly stood by his locker and sort of said, "Oh, well."

"If you go seven innings and give up one run, you feel pretty good about it," he said. "You can't let wins and losses affect that."

Asked if any Giants hitters have apologized, Bumgarner said he did not expect any.

"Hitting is the hardest thing to do in any sport," he said. "I think they'll come around. We're still in it. It's not like we're out of it.""
