Federico Macheda has returned to United from a one-month loan spell with Doncaster Rovers after picking up a hamstring injury.

The Italian agreed to a short stay with the Championship outfit on September 16 and made his debut just a day later as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Watford.

Macheda has scored three goals in a total of five appearances for Paul Dickov's side but was forced from the field in the 75th minute of Saturday's 1-0 win over Leicester.

As a result of that injury Macheda has returned to his parent club for treatment rather than remaining with Doncaster to train during the international break.

However Rovers manager Paul Dickov has expressed his desire to bring the 22-year-old back to Keepmoat Stadium.

He told the club's official website: "He came off with a tight hamstring and will be missing for a good few weeks but we are still looking at extending his deal as we hope to have him back soon.
