Longoria now fourth on Rays' career HR list

"3B Evan Longoria moved into fourth place on the Rays' all-time home run list Friday with the 100th of his career, an opposite-field solo shot into the Yankees' bullpen at Yankee Stadium.

Of the 25 players in major-league history to hit 500 home runs, only 13 reached 100 in fewer games than Longoria, who did it in his 519th career game.

"It sounds good," Longoria said, "but the goal is to stay healthy and see where that takes me."

Longoria said before Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Yankees that the nerve injury in the bottom of his left foot is no longer an issue, having responded to a change in treatment and a change of spikes.

Head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield changed the treatment from heat-based to cold-based, while Longoria changed his Nike spikes to one with a wider toe box.

Longoria said more room for his toes means the nerve is no longer being pinched.

"Changing a shoe can really matter sometimes. I've seen that with other guys, too," manager Joe Maddon said."
