Barcelona defender Martin Montoya, a target for Liverpool, has moved to extinguish any doubts about his immediate future after it was announced that he is to sign a new long-term contract with his current employers later this week.

As revealed on the official Barcelona website, Montoya has agreed a contract until 2018, which will include a release clause of €20 million, and the 22-year-old will put pen to paper on Friday to formalise the deal.

Liverpool had entered into talks with Barcelona regarding the acquisition of Montoya in the January transfer window, with managing director Ian Ayre having met with officials from the Catalan club to discuss a potential transfer fee.
