The Reds have lost out on several attacking targets in the last year - most notably Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian and Mohamed Salah - and Brendan Rodgers wants to make several high-profile signings if his side secure their first top four finish since 2009.

And, according to reports in Portugal, Rodgers is in pursuit of Gaitan, whose reputation has blossomed since he joined Benfica from Boca Juniors in 2010.

Liverpool have scouted him during some of Benfica's domestic and European fixtures this year and will continue to keep an eye on him until the end of the season.

United have been linked with Gaitan for the past couple of years and were reportedly close to landing him in the summer of 2012.
