In the sternest test of his career, Wes Welker’s Undrafted garnered a measure of esteem on Saturday, finishing a good fourth in the Group 1 July Cup at England’s Newmarket Racecourse.
A four-year-old chestnut-colored gelding, Undrafted raced near the back of the back early and ran on well in the stretch, beaten about 2-to-3 lengths by winner and race favorite Slade Power. The race distance was about three-quarters of a mile on the turf.
Undrafted’s July Cup run was his best performance in a Group 1 race to date, and it comes on the heels of his June 7 win in the Jaipur Invitational Stakes at New York’s Belmont Park.
