"The Lions didn't think enough of Kevin Smith to tender him a contract as a restricted free agent this off-season, but with their running game struggling and starter Jahvid Best still dealing with a concussion, they turned to a familiar face Monday.

Smith and offensive guard Leonard Davis signed free-agent deals with the Lions. Both players worked out for the team last week, and Davis also visited in August after he was released by the Cowboys.

"Obviously, I'm more familiar with Kevin. I played my first two years with him," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "I know he brings a ton of hard work to the team. He's a guy that understands our offense. He's a leader with his work ethic."
