"The Detroit Lions today released running back Aaron Brown to make room for Joique Bell, who was signed off the New Orleans Saints' practice squad on Monday.

Brown, who was cut by the Lions in the preseason, re-signed Nov. 28, after Kevin Smith suffered a high ankle sprain. Signed because of his familiarity with the offense, he appeared in one game, carried one time and caught one pass for nine yards.

Bell, a Wayne State product, signed a two-year contract and will provide depth behind Smith, Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams in Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers and in the playoffs.

He appeared in eight games with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts last year but does not have an NFL carry.

Bell said he expects that to change Sunday, which could mean the Lions will rest Smith with a playoff berth already in hand. Smith scored two touchdowns in Saturday's playoff-clinching win over the San Diego Chargers but remains hobbled by his ankle. "
