Lions' Kevin Smith to have shoulder surgery; Daunte Culpepper might be back

"Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew met with the media for about 50 minutes today, and he covered a lot of ground. Details will come shortly, but here are the highlights of what he had to say:

* Running back Kevin Smith, who is recovering from knee surgery, also will undergo surgery on his left shoulder. Because Smith still is on crutches, the work on his shoulder won't be done until he's off crutches.

* Because of Smith's injury situation, the Lions expect to add a running back to the team in one form or another. Mayhew also said that Smith was playing with two injured shoulders for almost the entire season.

* Free agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper could be back in Lions' uniform next season.

* Quarterback Drew Stanton still is a part of the team's plans moving forward.

* While the early returns on the draft class are good, Mayhew said it's still too early to declare Detroit's recent draft class a success. Mayhew said it takes a couple years before that determination can be made.

* Asked if the Lions might consider drafting an offensive player with the second overall pick, Mayhew said "Absolutely.''"
