"Lions running back Kevin Smith said he is welcoming his main competition for the starting job, first-round draft pick Jahvid Best of California.

"I think he's a good complement because he's able to make it to this level and because of what he was able to do in college," Smith said in a story on the Lions' Web site. "I think that he's a good addition. Obviously, if we picked him up in the first round, he's someone who can help the team.

"I'm all welcome. I like that type of stuff -- anything that can help us win, I'm all about winning."

While Best has been receiving high praise for his speed and highlight-reel performances that are currently starring on YouTube, Smith's future is uncertain. He's rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and coaches have not said when they expect him to return, although Smith is aiming for training camp around late July.

According to the Lions, Smith ran routes, took handoffs and took part in individual drills in the team's first organized team activity last week."
