Lions have nothing to lose in pursuing Donte' Stallworth

"The Lions had "no official comment" on whether receiver Donte' Stallworth was in Allen Park for a workout on Wednesday.

But there are multiple reports the team is interested in taking a look at the former Browns receiver and he was expected to be in Detroit late Wednesday or possibly today for a workout.

It's a good move by the Lions to at least take a look at Stallworth.

After a year-long suspension for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk, Stallworth was reinstated Sunday by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and released by the Browns on Monday.

Stallworth, 29, hasn't played a snap in more than a year.

Because of that, most people consider Stallworth on the downside of his career and see him, at best, as a No. 3 receiver if he catches on with a team.

But never count out a guy given a second chance.

Stallworth was given a 30-day jail sentence, of which he served 24 days, and reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the family of 59-year-old Mario Reyes, the Miami area construction worker he killed.

His football career was nearly taken from him and he knows this is his last chance in the NFL.

That can be powerful motivation.

Not unlike the motivation of being on the final year of a rookie contract and looking for a big payday, which was the case in 2005 with the Saints when he had his best season as a pro.

Drew Rosenhaus, Stallworth's agent, told the Boston Globe that his client was "in the best shape he's been in since he's been representing him."

Rosenhaus said Stallworth has been running routes and catching passes over the course of his suspension.

Stallworth has played for the Browns, Patriots, Eagles and Saints in an NFL career that started in 2002.

He has 296 receptions for 4,383 yards and 32 touchdowns.

He's five years removed from his best NFL season in 2005, his last in New Orleans, when he caught 70 passes for 945 yards and seven touchdowns."
