Here's the truth of the matter: The only way Havard Rugland was going to make the Lions’ 53-man roster was if something unsuspected and tragic happened to David Akers.

Nothing did and Rugland the Norwegian YouTube sensation known as “Kickalicious” was released Tuesday along with cornerback DaQuan Menzie and receiver Terrence Austin.

That said Rugland has put himself onto the list of teams’ prospects for placekickers. He kicked well in his time with the Lions and will probably get another chance with another club down the line.

But the writing was on the wall for Rugland. Coach Jim Schwartz was getting weary of all the extra attention a story like Rugland’s was getting. When the second question after a brutal preseason loss to the Browns was about Rugland two weeks ago Schwartz barely kept his composure.

Last week after Akers had kicked a 63-yarder in practice Schwartz was asked if Rugland would get a chance to kick a 60-yarder.

"We'll see if the situation comes up" he said. "We're not out here having a county fair circus or paying a dollar and having a shot at doing something."
