Just to clarify what happened with Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Ryan Malone during Tuesday night's 2-1 win over the Canadiens when he went after Montreal's Alexei Emelin:
Malone received a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, five minutes for fighting and an aggressor game misconduct. Such a misconduct is given when a player continues to pound an opponent who already has been beaten up in a fight. Any game misconduct comes with an automatic $200 fine and possible supplemental discipline by the league.
Malone went after Emelin 8:16 into the second period, just after Emelin served two minutes for interference for a hit on Malone, who took exception since the puck, which had been sent in Malone's direction, missed its target by a wide margin. Emelin's hit apparently was payback for an earlier hard hit Malone put on Emelin against the end boards. As Malone pounded Emelin, Montreal's P.K. Subban took at least one step onto the ice off the bench but was pushed back by referee Dan O'Halloran.
