"For now, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is not saying that closer Brad Lidge has suffered a setback in his recovery.
But he is worried enough to have Lidge fly back to Philadelphia to have his elbow examined by team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti.
Lidge has been in extended spring training in Clearwater, Fla., working his way back from a rotator-cuff strain, which has kept him out all season.
Amaro said Lidge typically has elbow soreness during spring training. This period is like spring training for Lidge, who hasn't pitched competitively since late March.
"If it's something more serious than just normal soreness, then, yeah, it could be a setback," Amaro said.
Lidge appeared in his first extended spring-training game May 28. He complained of discomfort after his next game, which was last Tuesday. He was shut down until Saturday, when he played catch. Lidge threw a bullpen session Monday and continued to feel discomfort.
A few weeks ago, Lidge said he was hoping to return to the Phillies later this month. That seems unlikely. Even if Ciccotti determines Lidge's elbow is just sore, he'll probably be shut down for a few more days at least.
He would still have to go through a rehab assignment.
Amaro did say that Lidge hasn't had any problems with his shoulder."
