First period: The Stars had the better chances in a fast period, as Dallas finished with a 13-8 edge in shots on goal and a 21-16 edge in shot attempts. Carolina goalie Anton Khudobin made several big saves, including stopping Dustin Jeffrey in transition, Vern Fiddler on a breakaway, and Jamie Benn from point blank. Kari Lehtonen also made some nice saves, stopping Elias Lindholm and Nathan Gerbe from in close.
Stars 0, Carolina 0
Second period: Carolina scored three goals in the first 7:06 of the period and chased Lehtonen from the game. Eric Staal scored on a fluke play, as John-Michael Liles took a shot from the point, the puck hit Staal, caromed high in the air, and settled down behind Lehtonen. Patrik Nemeth then had a delay of game penalty that led to a Justin Faulk power play goal, and added a hooking call that led to a Liles power play goal. Tyler Seguin cut the deficit to 3-1 with a nice rush down the left wing after getting spring off a Valeri Nichushkin pass.
Carolina 3, Stars 1
Third period: Stars goalie Tim Thomas was spectacular in keeping Dallas in the game, as he turned away several great chances and allowed the Stars to push for a goal that could cut the deficit to one. However, Khudobin would not be scored upon, and Thomas was simply worn down at the end of a shift where Riley Nash finally scored for the Hurricanes. Thomas finished with 12 saves on 13 shots against.
