Cliff Lee wants to be on the mound, as he was during the 10th inning last Wednesday when he felt a slight twinge in his side. He asked to go back out for the 11th, too, despite the pain.

But as the soreness lingered into the weekend, caution finally outweighed competitiveness for Lee.

The lefty was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after some debate over whether missing just a single start would give his left oblique enough time to heal.

"We erred on the side of caution and play it safe," Lee said. "I can't really argue with that either."
