LeBron engaged, pops question on New Year's Eve

"A lot of memories have been made since Dwyane Wade and LeBron James decided to team up to play on the Miami Heat.

And just after the clock struck midnight to bring in the new year on Sunday morning, the duo did it again at the Shelborne Hotel in South Beach.

As James' friends, family and teammates turned to one another to say, "Happy New Year," the All-Star forward picked up an engagement ring from Wade, who was in charge of holding it until that moment. James then dropped to one knee and proposed to longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson, who said yes.

"It was real cool," James said. "It was an opportunity for me with my personal life, so it was good. My girl, she's very excited."

Brinson was also surprised.

"He was just trying to catch her off-guard," Wade said. "Obviously, they've been together for a while, and I'm sure they had many discussions about the possibility of marriage. So, I thought he did a good job of catching her when she least expected it."

James popped the question as he celebrated New Year's Eve and his 27th birthday, which was Friday, with a party on South Beach.

But it turned into a celebration of the couple. James and Brinson, who are high-school sweethearts, have two young sons, 7-year-old LeBron Jr. and 4-year-old Bryce.

Reports regarding the engagement began to emerge Sunday morning after people close to James congratulated the couple on Twitter.

Heat owner Micky Arison posted on his Twitter account: "Congrats to LeBron. @KingJames and Savannah so happy 4 u guys."

From the Twitter account of Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul came the message, "Happy for my brother @KingJames and sis @SavannahRB on their engagement!!! Extremely happy for them and the good times to come."

And from the Twitter account of LaLa Vasquez, wife of New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony came, "CONGRATS are in order!! 2012 has already come in w/a BANG!! Congrats to @KingJames and @SavannahRB on their engagement!! We love u guys!!""
