"Soon after being drafted last Saturday by the Cardinals last Saturday, receiver DeMarco Sampson received a phone call from "an anonymous player" inviting him to Phoenix to attend off-season workouts organized by receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
So Sampson caught a flight from San Diego and is staying at the home of Fitzgerald. It doesn't take CSI-Phoenix to figure out who made the phone call.
"I'm not trying to blow him up or toot his horn," Sampson said. "I feel like ever since I met him, he's a real humble guy. He doesn't live the typical life of an athlete."
Sampson and Fitzgerald were among about 20 quarterbacks and receivers who threw and caught during a session Wednesday morning. Many other Cardinals players were there, including quarterbacks John Skelton and Rich Bartel, and receivers Steve Breaston, and Stephen Williams.
Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, who lives in Chandler in the off-season, also threw, and Ravens tight end Todd Heap, a product of Arizona State, was among the receivers.
Fitzgerald has tried to keep the workouts low-key. No one is pressured to come, and the only non-athletes in attendance Wednesday were an athletic trainer, former NFL assistant coach Dave Atkins, a reporter and an Arizona State employee who unlocked the gate.
"I always believe in a low profile," McNabb said. "Guys get a chance to work and it's not something you're broadcasting all over the place, telling everybody what you are doing and who is in town and all of that.
"I don't think that's needed. I think guys understand in this period the work you need to put forth. As you can see we push each other. A lot of us have known each other for a while.""
