The Indiana Pacers decided to sign center Andrew Bynum to back up Roy Hibbert and provide depth up front with veteran Ian Mahinmi over the weekend.

“We’ve got protection for Roy (Hibbert) and Ian (Mahinmi) and we’ll see how it works out,” Pacers’ president of basketball operations Larry Bird told Candace Buckner of the Indianapolis Star. ”I think it’s a great upside for us, we don’t do anything that we don’t think is going to help us and I think this is going to help us.

Bird sounded happy with the acquisition, but would not discuss the future.

“I ain’t worrying about next year and I haven’t all year,” Bird said, when asked responding to a question about whether the Bynum addition was for the long term. ”We’re in the now and we’re going to do whatever we can to go as far as we possibly can. We know there’s going to be some tough competition but if we get a chance to improve our team, we’re going to try to do that.”
