LaDainian Tomlinson believes Jets can be No. 1 offense in NFL

"LaDainian Tomlinson believes the Jets can be the No. 1 offense in the NFL - but admits the unit is still very much a work-in-progress.

"I think we can be the top offense in the league, honestly. But with that said, we still have a long way to go," the veteran running back said. "With the additions we've added, and guys finding their roles, and different things (offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) is going to do with us. The way he's going to use us; the different personnel we are going to use. It's going to take a little time to get where we want to go, being the No. 1 offense in the league. But I think we definitely have the potential."

One key addition is 6-foot-5 receiver Plaxico Burress, whom Tomlinson expects to make a big difference for the Jets.

"Plax adds a different dimension to this offense that, quite frankly, we haven't had," Tomlinson said. "He's a big-play type of guy that can go deep and catch the ball. Especially in the red zone, you can throw the ball up to him. He's made a living off of scoring in the red zone."

Tomlinson's role in the offense is expected to be reduced from last year. After getting off to a fast start this fall, Tomlinson served as the team's starting running back. But this year, he has accepted a role as the third-down back and the back-up to Shonn Greene, the third-year player the Jets want to use as their "bell-cow.""
